A catechism is a handbook of questions and answers for teaching the principles of a religion. The first 'Shorter Catechism' was published in 1647 but this edition was printed in 1863. It is stamped, 'Heriot Schools, Edinburgh'.
The book has a dark green cover, a leather spine and leather corners.
George Heriot (1563-1624) became one of Edinburgh's richest burgesses. A goldsmith by trade, he bequeathed a sum of £23,625 for the foundation of George Heriot's Hospital/School in Edinburgh.
