Square of embroidered linen

This embroidered linen square was used to cover a Communion cup. A rare piece, it dates from the late 16th century. It was probably made by someone with the initials 'HB' which are featured in the centre of the square.

The linen square has an embroidered crimson silk border with a text taken from Psalm 40. The text reads: 'Cal upon me sayeth the Lord in tym of the trebil and I sal delyvir the and thou sal honour me.'
