Punch ladle owned by Niel Gow
Add to album

This wooden and silver-mounted punch ladle was owned by Niel Gow (1727-1807). Gow was a gifted fiddler who earned his living from music and did much to preserve and promote traditional Scottish music.

The ladle has a silver plate inscribed `Niel Gow's Punch Spoon, Presented by his Daughter, Mrs M'Donald, to her son-in-law, David Foggo, 1810'.

After attracting the support of the Duke of Atholl, who admired his talents, Gow found himself in demand in influential circles but he was not interested in moving to the city and distinguished visitors such as Robert Burns had to travel to hear him.
