This model of a blast furnace and two heaters, is based on furnaces built at Glengarnock Ironworks in Ayrshire. It was made around 1900 in the Museum workshops.

The model is all partly in section, with dust catcher, hot blast, cold blast, and gas mains and cooling pipes. The tower on the right of the picture is the stove, which heats the furnace, the large cylindrical structure to its left. The model is built to a scale of half of an inch to one foot.

In the 1860s there were 164 blast furnaces in Scotland.
