Add to album

This blue transfer-printed earthenware soup plate was exported to South East Asia by the Glasgow potters, J. and M.P. Bell and Company. It dates from between 1842 and 1880.

The pattern is called 'SIAM'. The centre shows a circular field with Willow pattern style pagodas and boats with a palm tree and rocks in the foreground. The border design includes flower heads, vine leaves and trefoils.

Some of Bell's exported plates can still be found in the bazaars and markets of South East Asia.
