This silver watch is reputed to have been given to John Paul Jones in 1765. John Paul Jones is credited with being the founder of the United States Navy.

John Paul Jones led a small force which terrorized the coast of Scotland during the American War of Independence. His activities brought renewed demands for a Scottish militia.
