Model, of self-righting lifeboatThis wooden model is of a self-righting lifeboat of the type used from the 1850s to the 1880s. Capable of carrying 47 passengers, this design of lifeboat remained popular until the 1950s. The model is built to a scale of 1:24 and was made by the builder to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. On the bows is a circular plaque which reads 'SUPPORTED BY VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTIONS' and 'NATIONAL LIFEBOAT INSTITUTION'. On the gunwale at the bow is painted 'FRIENDS OF ALL NATIONS'. The self-righting lifeboat was carvel-built i.e. its hull planks were fastened edge-to-edge. It was constructed with a double thickness of planking and had watertight tanks and air cases for additional buoyancy. The boat was able to right itself if it capsized in heavy seas and all water above floor level was dispersed in 20 seconds by means of large delivery valves.
