Add to album

This bronze chisel was found at Dererach on Mull in the Inner Hebrides. It dates from between 2250 and 1900 BC.

The flat chisel is quite corroded. The form of flat chisels may be related to that of axeheads, and in some cases it is difficult to distinguish between the two. They were specialist woodworking tools.

Chisels of this date are very rare. However, small matrices for their production are present on stone moulds. As a result, it may simply be a case that these tools were not usually disposed of in a way that led to their survival and eventual discovery.
