This jacket and waistcoat of a private soldier dates from around 1795. Although the jacket and waistcoat bear the buttons of the Strathspey Volunteers, they were probably first made either for the 97th (Inverness-shire) Regiment or the Strathspey Fencibles.

Soldiers' waistcoats were generally made from the remnants of other items of uniform. This waistcoat has a tartan back, probably from an old plaid.
