RecordStone disc with an incised Pictish symbol< 1 of 1 > Back From Jarlshof, Shetland
Stone disc with an incised Pictish symbolThis stone disc with an incised Pictish symbol was found at Jarlshof in Shetland. It dates from between 500 and 800. The disc has the Pictish symbol, sometimes called a 'double-disc and Z-rod', incised on it. Other examples of the symbol have been found on monumental stones and silver jewellery. Monumental stones and some portable objects were decorated by the Picts with a range of unusual symbols, some of everyday objects and others more abstract. Many theories have been proposed to explain their meanings which nevertheless remain obscure. Record detailsTo search on related items, click any linked text below.
