This earthenware jug is transfer printed with scenes and verses from the poem 'The Gentle Shepherd' by Allan Ramsay. It was made around the 1820s at Hamilton Watson's pottery at Prestonpans in East Lothian.
The pattern on the jug depicts two figures outside a cottage. Ramsay's popular poem was published with illustrations by David Allan in 1788, and his aquatints were the source for this print.
Hamilton Watson took over the running of the original William Cadell pottery at Prestonpans in 1817 and continued until his bankruptcy in 1838.
