Dunvegan CastleThis engraving depicts the tower and fortress of Dunvegan, a coastal fortress in Skye reflecting the importance of sea power in Highland history and principal residence of the MacLeod chieftains. The 16th century tower and banqueting hall provided a focus for the traditional patronage of Gaelic culture by MacLeod who customarily rewarded generously poets, harpers and pipers for their fulsome praise of Dun nan Cliar (Dunvegan of the Poet Bands) and Talla nan Cuach (The Banqueting Hall of the Cups).
