Gold half-crown coin (obverse) minted during King Charles I
Add to album

This is the obverse of a gold half-crown minted at Edinburgh between 1637 and 1642, during the reign of Charles I. The coin was worth 30 shillings Scots.

The obverse bears a crowned portrait of the king with a small 'B' sideways. The Latin inscription translates as: 'Charles, by the Grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland'.

The 'B' on the coin is the initial of Nicolas Briot, Master of the Mint at this time.
