Fashion plate, from The Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine
This hand-coloured fashion plate is from The Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine, a ladies' magazine published in London. The plate illustrates day dresses for two women and a young girl. It is dated July, 1865.
The figures are standing at the foot of an outdoor flight of steps. The woman on the right is wearing a hat with a veil and carrying a fringed parasol. The plate is signed, 'Jules David' and 'A. Bodin'.
Sometimes parasols were made with a joint in the middle, so that the holder could be shielded from the sun at any angle. Small versions were also attached to carriages for use when driving.
