RecordTwo phials and a glass rod< 1 of 1 > Back From Birrens, Dumfriesshire
Two phials and a glass rodThese two glass phials, together with the glass rod, were found at Birrens in Dumfriesshire. They are examples of medical equipment found at Roman forts in Scotland. One phial with a lip and slightly broader bottom is complete; the other is missing its lip. The rod is of green, twisted glass, with a flat knob at the end. The Roman army medical service was impressively equipped and could deal with a variety of injuries. They had eye lotions, potions and powders, and a range of surgical instruments.
