RecordPirn winding wheelfrom Kilbarchan, Renfrewshire
Pirn winding wheelA pirn is a spool or reel on which thread or yarn is wound. This pirn winding wheel comes from Kilbarchan in Renfrewshire. It dates from the 19th century. It is similar to a muckle wheel but was used for winding yarn on to the pirns carried in the loom shuttles. The weaving of linen from flax became increasingly important and by the late 17th century linen was Scotland's most important export. After the Union its growth was further encouraged by free trade with England, export bounties and the new Board of Manufactures. Record detailsTo search on related items, click any linked text below.
