Scimitar and scabbard
Add to album

A scimitar is a short curved sword used chiefly by Turks or Arabs. This example, pictured here inserted in its scabbard, was owned by Tipu Sultan, ruler of Mysore in India.

The sword and scabbard are silver mounted and bear Arabic inscriptions.

Tipu Sultan fought against British rule in India and was defeated in 1799 by the Scottish General Sir David Baird. The General had formerly been one of the Sultan's prisoners.
