Thermometers, probably made by Negretti & ZambraThis type of thermometer was used on SS 'Scotia' between 1902 and 1904, on its expedition to the Antarctic. The thermometer was made around 1900, probably by Negretti & Zambra, scientific instrument makers based in London. The thermometer pictured above in the photograph is a spirit thermometer with a scale reading from -90 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. The lower instrument is a mercury thermometer and has a scale reading from -40 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. The instruments are marked 'SCOT: ANT: EXPED: 1902', with Meteorological Office markings. This expedition was led by William Spiers Bruce (1867-1921), a zoologist. There was no official British government backing for this voyage of exploration to the Weddell Sea, as Robert Falcon Scott was already in Antarctica.
