Printing blocks
Add to album

These printing blocks for use on textiles were used by David Evans and Co. Ltd of Crayford in Kent. They date from between around 1860 and the 1930s. Each block is for a border.

In each case the blocks' backing consists of a 'sandwich' of different timbers. The upper two blocks have type metal printing surfaces, while the face of the block at the foot is made up of copper pegs.

David Evans and Co. Ltd are silk dyers and printers and still demonstrate hand block printing at the visitor centre at Crayford. They occasionally demonstrate block-making and display a blockmakers' workshop.
