Add to album

This Lee Enfield Magazine Rifle Mark I dates from 1900. It was carried in the South African War by Corporal A Chisholm of the Lovat Scouts.

The detail shows the inscription 'No. 8709 CORPL. A CHISHOLM' engraved into the rifle's stock below the action.

The Lovat Scouts recruited workers from the Lovat sporting estates whose stalking and shooting skills were felt to be ideally suited to the terrain and tactics of the war. By recruiting men used to weapons and an outdoor life, the army was returning to one of its original reasons for recruiting Highlanders.
