Hammer, roves and nails

These are hammers, roves and copper boat nails used in the construction of traditional clinker boats in North Uist, 1999.

The hammers, roves and nails lie inside traditional clinker boat.

Traditional clinker boats have strakes (individual planks from stem to stern) overlapping the previous one. The width and shape of each strake varies throughout the boat. It is necessary to steam the wood in order to soften its fibres, after which it is possible to create complex curves without risk of breakage. The wood retains its new shape after cooling.
