Rein guide from a yoke

This thick bronze rein guide from a yoke, also known as a terret, was found at Cairngryffe in Lanarkshire. It dates from between the first four centuries AD.

The rein guide is of a type known as a massive terret.

Entire carts or wagons from this period rarely survive. Often all that is left are metal fittings and bindings, such as the harness fittings which attached a yoke to the harness.
