Add to album

This wooden tankard, also known as a mether, is Irish or Scottish and dates from the 17th or 18th century. It was used in the West Highlands and Islands.

The tankard has a cylindrical body with four handles, all carved out of one block of wood.

Beer and ale brewed in Scotland were the everyday drinks of most men, women and children. They could be drunk at any time of day, and were safer than water as the brewing process removed any germs.
