These postage stamps were issued to raise funds for the Scottish National War Memorial in Edinburgh Castle. Public support for a national memorial to commemorate the Scottish dead of the First World War was strong. After ten years of planning, the memorial opened in 1927, built on the highest point of the Castle rock.
This sheet of stamps commemorates Scots who served in the naval services. Other sheets commemorated Scottish regiments, women's services, the Royal Air Force and other troops.
