From Foshigarry, North Uist, Outer Hebrides
Add to albumThis bone object was probably used for stretching thongs. It was found at Foshigarry on North Uist in the Outer Hebrides. It is one of a number of objects found there which were used in producing leather goods, sometime between 200 BC and 800 AD.
The object has a waist where it has been worn smooth by rotary action.
Similar objects are known from a number of sites on the Hebrides. Their function has been the subject of some debate, but detailed study of similar objects from Russia convincingly showed that many were used to stretch thongs.
