Fashion plate, from La Mode Illustreé

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. Dating from 1893, the plate illustrates five types of hairstyle. It is signed, 'Bonnard' and 'Anaïs Toudouze'.

All the hairstyles consist of elaborately waved hair with masses of small curls covering the forehead. The two styles at the bottom show the hair coiled at the back into a loop known as the 'teapot handle'.

Adèle Anaïs Toudouze (1822-99), was one of the most prolific and popular fashion plate artists of the mid-nineteenth century. Her work could also be seen in the top twenty fashion magazines including Le Follet and Le Magasin des Desmoiselles.
