This is the warrant for a commission of inquiry into the slaughter of the MacDonalds of Glencoe. It is dated April 1695 and bears the autograph of William III.

In Glencoe on 13 February 1692, government soldiers killed 38 of the MacDonald clan who had been giving them food and shelter. The massacre had been secretly ordered as a way of asserting William III's authority in the Highlands.
