Painted enamel hand warmer and cover
Add to album

This brazier, which is intended for use as a hand warmer, exemplifies the incorporation of enamel painting into imperial ware manufacture.

This brazier is painted all over with sprays of flowers. The motifs are outlined with black enamel and filled with shades of yellow, pink, white, green and blue enamels. The ground is filled with light blue enamel.

Enamel painting was introduced to China by Western missionary artists who served within the imperial court. It was practised in enamel workshops in both Beijing and Guangzhou (Canton).
