This piece of an enamelled lid from a seal box was found during excavations at the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was used sometime between 80 and 180 AD.

The piece of the lid is decorated with a heart of red enamel in the centre.

Brought to Scotland by the Romans, writing was a vital part of thebureaucracy generated by the army. Some of the seal boxes which wereattached to tablets were expensive and ornate. Occasionally the lead sealssurvive as well.
