This silver tankard, dated 1705-6, was made in Edinburgh by Alexander Forbes.

The slightly tapering straight-sided body is set on a moulded foot. The domed-lid is attached to the scroll handle by an acanthus leaf thumb-piece.

Forbes was admitted to the Edinburgh Incorporation of Goldsmiths in 1692 after paying an extra entrance fee. Tankards seem to have been his speciality - he made one for the Marquess of Tweeddale in 1697 and one for the Earl of Traquair in 1707.
