Model, of oil tanker British Admiral

This builder's model is of the oil tanker 'British Admiral'. The original vessel was built in 1917 by Swan Hunter & Wigham Richardson Ltd on the Tyne. The wooden model is built to a scale of 1:96.

Driven by triple expansion steam engines, the 'British Admiral' could carry 9,000 tons of oil. She was owned by the British Tanker Company, a subsidiary of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company and for 20 years she carried oil from Iran to Europe. She was scrapped in 1936.

From the 18th century onwards, shipwrights built models to plan the shape of timbers and iron plates. Builders' models came to be included in the contract price of the ships themselves.
