Add to album

This surveyors' level (pictured here with its wooden case) dates from around 1845. It is made of brass. It was retailed by William Duncan, a scientific instrument maker based in Aberdeen.

The level has a bubble tube attached above the telescope, and a compass centred below it, above the socket mount. It comes in its wooden carrying case, which has a trade card for William Duncan's premises at 92 Union Street between 1842 and 1849.

In 1841, prior to moving to Union Street, William Duncan had premises at 46 Dee Street.
