This is the two of spades, one of a pack of 53 playing cards engraved in 1691 by Walter Scott, an Edinburgh goldsmith. The cards show the royal arms and arms of the Scottish nobility who sat in Parliament.

The arms of the Scottish Lords Hamilton (of Bargeny), Ogilvie, Murray and Galloway are depicted on the card.

As well as the standard gaming cards, other packs were produced for a variety of purposes - educational, political or purely artistic. These non-standard cards first appeared in Germany in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries.
