This is the reverse of a gold founder's medal of the Royal Geographical Society. The medal was awarded in 1885 to Joseph Thomson.
The reverse depicts the figure of Britannia with a globe of the world on her right and scientific instruments on her left. The inscription underneath reads, 'The Royal Geographical Society of London'.
The son of a Dumfriesshire stonemason, Thomson became interested in geology and natural history, and made a number of expeditions to Africa under the auspices of the Royal Geographical Society.
