This bronze stud was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was used on cavalry harness equipment sometime between 80 and 180 AD.

The stud has a circular head with a dished centre. The surface has been silvered or tinned to give a shiny appearance, with the design inlaid with niello. The stud is incomplete and damaged.

Newstead was the largest auxiliary fort in the Scotland in the late 1st century AD. In the 2nd century it held a cavalry regiment and legionary detachment. Excavations at Newstead have revealed much about the layout and daily life in Roman forts in Scotland.
