Sculptured stone (piece) (cast)

This is a cast of a sculptured stone found at Colinton in Midlothian. It was carved between 140 and 215 AD, and depicts three mother goddesses.

The carving is fragmentary and the faces have been chipped away. Each of the mother goddesses wears a shawl pinned by a brooch. The centre goddess holds grapes in her hand, while the other two hold baskets.

Roman religion was tolerant and flexible. Deities who were not part of normal Roman beliefs were readily adopted and worshipped. Soldiers brought their local gods and goddesses, such as these goddesses who were worshipped in the Rhineland.
