Model, of fishing boatThis wooden model represents a Faroe Islands fishing boat from 1858. It is built to a scale of 1:12. This eight-man fishing boat shows many characteristics of the Viking longboat. The double-ended form gave good buoyancy in heavy seas and was commonly known as a 'whaler'. The sail was known as a lugsail. The Faroe Islands lie 320 kilometres to the north-west of Shetland and the local fishermen used this type of boat to catch grindhval and bottle-nosed whales. The whale meat would have been cut into steaks for eating and the blubber was used for oil. Record detailsTo search on related items, click any linked text below.
