This iron pin was found at Bonchester in Roxburghshire. It was used sometime in the last two centuries BC.

The iron rod has been hammered out and shaped into a ring at the top.

Iron first appears in Scotland by 700 BC. At first it was heated and hammered into shapes, using a range of hammers. With skilful working, a range of decorative items such as this one, as well as functional objects, were produced.
