Model, of fishing boat

This model is of a small fishing boat from Bombay. It is made from one piece of tree bark bent to form the main hull, with extra bark pieces tied to the sides.

The hull has a rounded bottom and a curved bow and stern. The model is also equipped with two cotton sails and a wooden rudder.

Although many types of wood will float, they need to be built into a hull (enclosing a volume of air) in order to carry people or cargo. Built-up hulls are shaped for different purposes; long and narrow for speed, short and deep for cargo, wide and shallow for coastal waters. Sharp bows cut through the water, flared bows lift over the waves and double-ended boats guard against following waves.
