Pistol, owned by father of James Graham, 1st Marquess of Montrose

This brass snaphaunce pistol was owned by the father of James Graham, 1st Marquess of Montrose. It was made in Scotland in 1615.

Scottish pistol, snaphaunce, brass, 1615

James Graham, 1st Marquess of Montrose, was one of Scotland's most successful and feared generals of the 17th century. With the backing of a Highland army, Montrose was able to threaten the government of Scotland. During the Wars of the Covenant, Montrose and his ally Alasdair MacColla led an army of Highland and Irish soldiers to a string of remarkable victories over Covenanter armies before his eventual defeat in 1645. Brought up on the fringes of the Highlands, Montrose knew how to make the best use of the traditional Highland way of warfare.
