This silver coin was struck in an eastern mint for Marcus Antonius (Mark Antony) by Marcus Barbatius Philippus in 41 BC. It is a type called a denarius, the most common Roman silver coin. This picture shows the obverse of the coin.

The portrait of Mark Antony is surrounded by the legend 'M.ANT.IMP.AVG.III.VIR.R.P.C.M.BARBAT.Q.P'. This identifies him, and his position (Imperator and member of the triumvirate), as well as Marcus Barbatius and his position.

After the defeat of Cassius and Brutus, and with it the Republican cause, in 42 BC, Antony went east to raise funds and restore order. Marcus Barbatius was a friend of Caesar and later quaestor pro praetore (a financial official) for Antony.
