This steel roller dates from the 17th century. It was used in the Edinburgh mint to flatten strips of metal.

Roller for flattening silver

Until the late 15th century the Edinburgh mint was just one of many operating in several Scottish burghs. From the reign of James IV (1488-1513) almost all Scottish coins were minted in Edinburgh.
