Model, of dredger Bhavsinhji
Add to album

This model is of the grab hopper dredger 'Bhavsinhji'. The original was built by Henry Robb Ltd of Leith for work in the Province of Kathiawar in the State of Bhavnagar in India. The model is built to a scale of 1:48.

From the central Priestman crane was suspended a large, single hinged grab (visible on the model). Silt from the river was taken on board by the grab, emptied into a chute and passed down into the hoppers which had a capacity of 500 tons. Doors in the bottom of the vessel could later be opened and the silt dumped in deep water. Up to 200 tons of silt could be dredged in an hour.

'Bhavsinhji' was registered in Bombay and was in service for some 30 years. She was one of Henry Robb's earliest sea-going vessels and the first of the company's dredgers. The vessel marked the beginning of a long association between Henry Robb Ltd and Priestman Brothers of Hull, whose grab dredging cranes were world renowned.
