This sporran is part of a Ross tartan suit made and worn for George IV's visit to Scotland in 1822. The suit was taken out to Australia by Donald Munro Ross when he emigrated in 1864.

The animal head is folded over to create the pocket flap and two claws hang at either side to form tassels.

Sporrans, a medieval form of purse, had a long tradition and retained their basic design. Earlier sporrans were made from leather or skin alone, often with decorative tassels on their drawstrings.
