Silk sash of the Caledonia Friendly Society

This silk sash of the Caledonia Friendly Society dates from the 19th century.

The blue sash is painted with 'Caledonia H.F.S.' in gold letters. It has a red border.

By banding together in friendly societies, working people could protect themselves from hardship or loss, or save for special needs. This helped them along the road to respectability and also influenced demands for more democratic rights.
