Add to album

This silver 'freedom box' was presented to Sir John Barnard M.P. by the City of Edinburgh. It contained a parchment conferring on Barnard the Freedom of the City. The box was made in 1736-7 by John Rollo, a goldsmith in Edinburgh.

The lid is engraved with the City arms on a central boss, which is surrounded by a formal leaf border.

The box was presented to Sir John Barnard for helping to avert the town's punishment after the Porteous Riots.
