SpearheadThis bronze spearhead was found at Arnicle at Kintyre in Argyll. The fragment of exposed wood in the spear shaft has been dated by carbon-14 techniques to between 1520 and 1260 BC. The spearhead has loops on the socket, one now broken. The socket has been split away by corrosion, exposing a bit of the wooden shaft which, unusually, was preserved on this spear. Spears were used both for fighting and for hunting. Some were designed to be thrusting weapons, while other lighter examples were designed to be thrown.
