Mourning locket of black-enamelled gold

This black enamelled gold mourning locket dates from the mid 19th century.

Underneath the glass flower on the front of the locket are three separate locks of hair.

The Victorian custom of wearing jewellery to commemorate the dead created a demand for mourning lockets, brooches and rings.
