Mustard spoon (back), associated with MacLeods of Geanies, Ross-shire
Add to album

This is the front of a silver mustard spoon associated with the MacLeods of Geanies in Ross-shire. Dated 1817, the spoon is part of a service assembled by several generations of the family.

The spoon was made in Calcutta by Hamilton and Co, using a king's pattern design by Morton of Edinburgh. The back is stamped with the maker's initials, 'A/H&Co.'

Scotland not only provided India with soldiers and colonial administrators. With restricted opportunities at home, aspiring craftsmen found it necessary to expand their horizons.
