This horn spoon has the date 1773 or 1778 incised on the handle.

The reverse of the spoon bowl is decorated with a thistle design surrounded by roundels containing geometric flower shapes. On the left of the thistle are the letters 'PH', on the right 'HD'.

Cattle horn was heated to soften it and moulded to make spoons and other utensils. Such natural resources provided the things people needed for everyday life. Without access to manufactured goods, and without money to buy them, people had little choice.
